The art paintings are the soul of home decor

Elevating Your Home Decor Decorative paintings are the soul of home decor, capable of quickly enhancing a room's spatial quality and sophistication. Just one painting can completely change the layout of a space. So, how do you choose the right wall art painting for your home? Let's discuss it!

Today, we're only going to talk about affordable wall decor ideas that are suitable for the average household. If you're looking for high-end art or gallery prints, then that's a different story. Before you start choosing a painting, there are four questions you need to answer to determine what kind of painting is best for your home:

  1. How big should the painting be?
  2. Where should the painting be hung?
  3. What kind of painting should it be?
  4. Where should you buy it?

1.How big should the painting be?

The first question that comes to mind is - how big should the painting be? The answer is simple – as big as possible! A general rule of thumb is to choose a painting that covers at least 60% of the wall space. For instance, if your wall is 2 meters wide, go for a painting that's no smaller than 1.2 meters.

When it comes to size, take into account the dimensions of the wall space and the room's overall layout. For example, if you're hanging a painting above a bed, choose a painting that's at least 1.4 meters wide for a bed that's 2 meters wide.

Next, consider whether to hang your painting horizontally or vertically. For larger areas like above a bed or sofa, a horizontal painting works best, while vertical paintings are great for narrow spaces like hallways.

2.Where should the painting be hung?

Once you’ve decided on the size and orientation, the next question is where to hang it. Ideally, choose a well-lit area in the room, such as near a window or a lamp. If you have a ceiling light, aim to hang the painting in a spot where the light will fall directly on it. This will highlight the painting's colors and add depth to the room.

Now, let's talk about the best spots to hang your painting. Hang it above the dining table, above the bedhead, or above the sofa for a statement piece. You could also try hanging it in an empty hallway or on a large, empty wall to create a focal point.

Lastly, consider whether to hang a single painting or a group of paintings. If you're hanging multiple paintings, aim for no more than three paintings in a group and ensure they complement each other in color and style.

3.What kind of painting should it be?

When it comes to choosing decorative paintings for your home, the goal is to find something that harmonizes well with the surrounding decor, not to grab attention. As an "art novice," you can't go wrong as long as you limit your choices to a certain range.

  • Abstract over Realistic

Realistic paintings aim to accurately depict and imitate objects, in other words, "paint what you see." However, since the late 19th century, abstract art has become more and more popular, using lines, shapes, and colors to express emotions. The left image below is a realistic painting by Da Vinci, and the right image is an abstract painting by Malevich.

Abstract art originated from modern art and is full of highly concise and geometric elements. Compared to realistic paintings, abstract art offers more viewing angles. It's still visually appealing despite being unfamiliar to everyday objects, making it appear more sophisticated.

  • Simplicity is key

Decorative paintings with too many colors can easily appear disorderly and be difficult to match with the surrounding decor. For example, using landscape photos as a decoration may look better in black and white, as it creates a stronger sense of depth compared to a simple, colorful photo.

Microscopic photography with enlarged details is also recommended. These photos usually focus on parts of plants, with uniform colors, and deviate from everyday perspectives, creating a sense of strangeness. For example, the first image below is a "fresh and clean" style photo, but it can become unpleasant over time. The second image enlarges the details of a plant leaf and processes it in black and white, creating a more stylish and tasteful image.
